Light Water Reactor Sustainability Program

The Light Water Reactor Sustainability (LWRS) Program, sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE) conducts research to develop technologies and other solutions to improve economics and reliability, sustain safety, and extend the operation of the nation's fleet of nuclear power plants. The NRC and DOE has a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Nuclear Energy Innovation to coordinate DOE and NRC technical readiness and sharing of technical expertise and knowledge on advanced nuclear reactor technologies and nuclear energy innovation.
To continue to address the key issues of the domestic fleet, the LWRS program consists of the following primary technical areas of research and development (R&D):
