New High-Value Dataset for Open Government
Consistent with our Open Government Plan, the NRC issued a new high-value dataset (with accompanying data dictionary) to expand the public's knowledge about the agency's oversight of nuclear facilities in the United States. The dataset of Significant NRC Enforcement Actions provides a comprehensive listing of significant ("escalated") enforcement actions that the NRC has issued to reactor licensees, materials licensees, fuel cycle facilities, non-licensees, and individuals. These actions include Notices of Violation for Severity Level I, II, or III violations; Notices of Violation associated with inspection findings that the Significance Determination Process categorizes as White, Yellow, or Red; Civil Penalties; and Orders. Available information includes action number, recipient's name, type, issue date, and summary. This dataset and the related Data Dictionary are available for free download in Microsoft Excel format.

Plain Writing at the NRC
In response to The Plain Writing Act of 2010, the NRC launched a new public site that offers convenient access to all information about our commitment to clear communication to keep you informed and give you an opportunity to participate in our regulatory, licensing, and oversight processes. Through this site you can learn about Plain Writing and Its Benefits, as well as the history of Federal Plain Writing Mandates. You can also find information about The NRC's Plain Writing Philosophy, Techniques, and Guidance, and monitor the development of The NRC's Plain Writing Action Plan, Reports, and News. In addition, to help us comply with the Act and evaluate our progress, we invite you to Contact Us with feedback on our Plain Writing Action Plan, any difficulty you may experience in understanding our documents or information on our public Web site, or the use of plain language in our public meetings.

Analysis of Cancer Risk in Populations Near Nuclear Facilities: Phase 1 Feasibility Study
To help address the public's concerns about releases of radioactivity from NRC-licensed facilities, the NRC has asked the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to perform a state-of-the-art study. This study will evaluate cancer diagnosis rates (in addition to mortality risk) for populations living near decommissioned, operating, and proposed facilities, including nuclear power plants that generate electricity, as well as facilities that create the nuclear fuel used in those plants. The result of this Phase 1 study will be used to inform the design of the cancer risk assessment that will be carried out in a future Phase 2 study.

Preview of the NRC Public Site Redesign
Tomorrow evening, the NRC will deploy the latest redesign of our public Web site, which features a modern look-and-feel, streamlined navigation, and rich features and functionality to make it quicker and easier for you to find the information you want. We'll complete our testing of the site over the weekend and make a formal announcement on Monday to officially unveil the redesign. To ensure a seamless transition, this redesign will maintain the same or similar buttons and links, while reformatting or reorganizing the site's existing content to enhance usability. Where significant organizational changes are needed, such changes will be phased in over time, consistent with best practices in Web design. For a sneak peak of our redesign, see our Video Preview (WMV format | MOV format).

Fire Protection and Fire Research Knowledge Management Digest
Through the years, the NRC has assembled an extensive collection of regulations, guidance, and other publications related to the agency's fire protection activities. The Fire Protection and Fire Research Knowledge Management Digest (NUREG/BR-0465) assembles these resources in a convenient CD-ROM format (Supplement 1) for use by NRC inspectors, technical reviewers, licensees, and other interested stakeholders. This user-friendly database provides the information needed during the inspection and review processes, and is divided into regulatory and technical knowledge sections. The regulatory knowledge section provides vital information, such as the pertinent parts of Title 10, Part 50, of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR Part 50), fire protection guidelines for nuclear power plants, inspection manual chapters and procedures, generic communications, regulatory issue summaries, and regulatory guides. The technical knowledge section contains technical reports prepared by or for the NRC, including fire test reports, fire protection studies, probabilistic risk assessments, and conference proceedings, all of which provide background and technical support for the NRC's fire protection requirements and guidelines. You may Contact Us to obtain a complete copy of this set. Alternatively, you may view or download the component files from our Related Information About Fire Protection.
