08/03/00 During the NRC/OAS/CRCPD teleconference on July 20, 2000, the topic, "Review of the NRC Research Program" was discussed. The NRC is assembling experts in government, industry and academia to assist the NRC in its review. The group of experts will be chaired by former NRC Commissioner Kenneth Rogers. The NRC would also like to have State input into the role and future direction of research efforts at NRC. The NRC plans to address this issue in two phases. The first phase will consist of two meetings. The first meeting is scheduled for August 16 -17, 2000 at the Marriott Residence Inn, 7335 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD. A second meeting is scheduled for the middle of September. During the first phase, the group will review the following issues: 1) Vision/Mission statement for the NRC Office of Research; 2) Emerging issues in the area of research; and 3) Adequacy of facilities to do research. Following the first phase, there will be an interim report and the second phase which will review the issues. We welcome the participation of one State representative to serve as a resource to the group committee. The NRC will fund travel and per diem for the State participant. The draft agenda for the August 16-17, 2000 meeting of experts is attached. Interested volunteers should contact Ed Bailey in California.
