Power Uprate Review Readiness

The NRC is committed to improving our reviews such that the review effort reflects the best use of resources, commensurate with the safety and risk significance. The NRC’s preparation strategy for the staff's review of future power uprate license amendment requests will support licensee schedules, while still providing reasonable assurance of public health and safety at U.S. nuclear power facilities.

On June 6, 2024, the NRC issued a memorandum for the Power Uprate Project Plan. The project plan focuses the NRC’s preparations to conduct efficient and effective reviews of Power Uprate applications. It provides a schedule for deliverables and includes targeted public interactions in addition to those listed in the Power Uprate Communication Plan. The Project Plan will be revised following the issuance of the staff’s recommendations to streamline/improve the PUR process as the staff moves toward implementation of recommendations.
 
On June 24, 2024, the NRC issued a memorandum for the Power Uprate Charter. The charter provides guidelines to establish and maintain the same cadres of reviewers that will be responsible for reviewing Power Uprate applications. The core team concept will facilitate more efficient reviews, incorporating lessons learned from one Power Uprate review to the next.

On September 30, 2024, the NRC issued a memorandum which transmits the preliminary recommendations that the Power Uprate Project Team identified for improving the quality of Power Uprate applications and for achieving efficiencies in the review process.
