Project Overview

The staff of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is currently engaged in pre-application activities for NuScale US460 small modular reactor (SMR) standard design approval application. NuScale US460 can generate 77MWe per module (gross), resulting in about 924MWe for the flagship 12-module power plant, with options for smaller power plant solutions in four-module (about 308 MWe) and six-module (about 462 MWe) sizes. NuScale US460 is an integral pressurized-water reactor, designed by NuScale Power, LLC. The design is based on Multi-Application Small Light Water Reactor developed at Oregon State University in the early 2000s. NuScale US460 is a natural circulation light water reactor with the reactor core and helical coil steam generators located in a common reactor vessel in a cylindrical steel containment. The reactor vessel containment module is submerged in water in the reactor building safety related pool, which is also the ultimate heat sink for the reactor. The pool portion of the reactor building is located below grade.
