T7 The Future of Fusion Power on the Grid: Building a Flexible, Resilient Regulatory Framework for Commercial Deployment of Fusion Machines

Following Commission direction to regulate fusion under the byproduct material framework in 10 CFR Part 30, NRC and Agreement State staff drafted a risk-informed, technology inclusive proposed rule and guidance document to regulate fusion machines. While the Commission reviews the proposed rule, the NRC is conducting a study mandated by the ADVANCE Act to develop recommendations for potential regulatory updates to support the standardized review of fusion machine designs for commercial deployment and to identify an estimated timeframe for implementation. In this session, the panel will discuss both regulatory and industry efforts to support the continued development of fusion technology and provide insights and perspectives on moving from research and development to commercially viable and publicly accepted fusion energy.
