W11 Accident Tolerant Fuel Readiness
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is committed to enabling the safe use of new technologies, especially those that can increase the safety of NRC regulated facilities. The U.S. nuclear industry, with the assistance of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), plans to deploy certain accident tolerant fuel (ATF) concepts, fuels with higher burnup levels, and fuels with enrichment above the current 5 weight percent uranium-235 in the operating fleet by mid-2020s. The NRC understands that it may face challenges in its preparations and technical and licensing reviews, but it is committed to working through such challenges in a thoughtful and deliberative manner. Successful implementation of ATF concepts will depend on early and effective engagement between the various stakeholders.
This session will be of interest to those who would like to learn about the progress of ATF licensing activities and technologies to date and the activities that support efficient licensing of ATF concepts. The focus for this session will include completed ATF readiness activities, readiness plans for remaining stakeholder activities, and challenges to ATF deployment timelines.
