Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance. The law states, in part, that:

No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States . . . shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance or under any program or activity conducted by any Executive agency . . . .

The Office of Small Business and Civil Rights (SBCR), Civil Rights Program, is responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with Section 504, investigating Section 504-related complaints, and providing technical assistance to recipients of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) financial assistance. The NRC has promulgated regulations that implement Section 504.
