T5 The Impact of U.S. Foreign Policy on Nuclear Safety and Security
U.S. Government policy and funding decisions have encouraged the development of civilian nuclear power capacity within the United States and the exporting of nuclear technology, equipment, and materials abroad. The commitment to nuclear power as part of the United States' long-term energy strategy continues, particularly with the growing interest in small modular reactors and advanced reactors. However, international issues are affecting nuclear safety and security priorities across the U.S. nuclear industry.
This technical session will highlight various emerging activities within the U.S. Government and the nuclear industry related to peaceful nuclear cooperation, including the evolution of U.S. Government and industry policies and priorities. Proposed panelists include the National Security Council, to discuss the Administration's domestic and international nuclear energy security priorities; DOE, to discuss changes to nuclear energy research and development and associated transfers of technology; the U.S. Department of State, to discuss foreign policy considerations related to international nuclear security; the NRC, to discuss its role in providing nuclear safety and security assistance abroad and the issuance of export licenses; and an industry representative, to discuss the industry's recent trends and current challenges in enhancing domestic and international nuclear safety and security.
