The NRC is sponsoring public workshops on the SCALE/MELCOR non-LWR Fuel Cycle Demonstration Project. The workshops are part of the agency’s efforts to prepare for safety reviews of non-LWR license applications. The following topics are covered: (1) An overview of a representative fuel cycle that covers enrichment and transportation of UF6, fresh fuel manufacturing, and spent fuel transportation and storage; (2) SCALE methods for predicting criticality, spent fuel fission product inventory and decay heats, as well as sample SCALE results; (3) MELCOR methods and results for accident analyses and fission product release to the environment. A workshop on the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) will be held on February 28, 2023.
