Licensing Modernization Project for Operating Reactors: Seeing Risk Insights Through a New Lens

Sponsored by the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research
This exhibit will highlight the future focus research project that evaluated the use of the Licensing Modernization Project (LMP) methodology described in SECY 19 0117, "Technology-Inclusive, Risk-Informed, and Performance-Based Methodology to Inform the Licensing Basis and Content of Applications for Licenses, Certifications, and Approvals for Non-Light-Water Reactors," dated December 2, 2019), and elaborated in Regulatory Guide 1.233, "Guidance for a Technology-Inclusive, Risk-Informed, and Performance-Based Methodology to Inform the Licensing Basis and Content of Applications for Licenses, Certifications, and Approvals for Non-Light Water Reactors," issued June 2020, and Nuclear Energy Institute 18-04, "Risk-Informed Performance-Based Technology for Non-Light Water Reactor Licensing Basis Development," issued 2019, for light-water reactor applications by applying the NRC's Level 3 probabilistic risk assessment model results. This exhibit will communicate the overall approach taken and the resulting key insights. These insights will highlight the LMP's overall approach and the possible benefits of leveraging these tools and results beyond the current regulatory scope. This exhibit will provide an overview of the final results for this future-focused research project and discuss possible future work in this area.
