Subsurface Soil Surveys and Characterization—Research Update

Sponsored by Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research

On July 14–15, 2021, the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research and the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards hosted a public workshop on subsurface soil surveys and characterization for licensee sites. This digital exhibit summarizes that workshop and describes next steps for this research effort. The overall goal is to develop the necessary technical basis for guidance on conducting and evaluating surveys of residual radioactivity in the subsurface soils of licensee sites. The NRC began to address this issue in NUREG/CR-7021, “A Subsurface Decision Model for Supporting Environmental Compliance,” issued January 2012. Research since the workshop has focused on applications of proposed characterization techniques to case studies as well as modifying existing software tools to meet anticipated subsurface challenges.
