Anton (Tony) Vegel

Mr. Vegel began serving in his current position as the Director for the Division Reactor Projects in May 2018.  Prior to his current assignment Mr. Vegel served as the Director for the Division of Reactor Safety from May 2014 to May 2018.    Mr. Vegel previously served as the Division Director for the Division of Nuclear Materials Safety where he was involved with the oversight of regional nuclear materials licensees through implementation of the region-based licensing and inspection program, as well as the inspection programs for spent fuel storage, reactor decommissioning, uranium recovery, the oversight of the specialized reactor programs, and operator licensing.  Prior to this assignment, he served as the Director, Division of Reactor Safety in Region IV; and Deputy Director, Division of Reactor Projects in Region IV.  Tony is a graduate of the 2002 SES Candidate Development Program.

Prior to reporting to Region IV, Mr. Vegel held positions of increasing responsibility in Regions I and III which included: Resident Inspector at Perry Nuclear Plant, Senior Resident Inspector at Zion and Fermi Nuclear Stations, Branch Chief in the Division of Reactor Projects in Region III, and the Systems Engineering Branch Chief in the Division of Reactor Safety in RIII.  In 2001, Mr. Vegel was a team member on the IAEA International Regulatory Review Team mission to Lithuania.  In 1997, Mr. Vegel received the NRC Meritorious Service Award for Senior Resident Inspector Excellence.  Mr. Vegel started his NRC career in 1989 as a Reactor Engineer in Region I.

Prior to joining the NRC, Mr. Vegel was an officer in the U.S. Navy Submarine force.  Mr. Vegel started his Naval career as an enlisted sailor and was subsequently selected to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Naval Architecture.
