United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission - Protecting People and the Environment

Rodrigo Rimando, Jr.

Rodrigo (Rod) V. Rimando, Jr. is a Senior Site Liaison in the United States (U.S.) Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management (EM) providing key interface and coordination with DOE’s former nuclear weapons development and production sites as they execute decommissioning and environmental cleanup. He has over 32 years of nuclear experience of which over 24 were spent working in a variety of field assignments directly managing environmental remediation, nuclear facility decommissioning, radioactive waste processing, spent nuclear fuel, and special nuclear materials projects. As a radiological engineer and health physicist, his experience also includes supporting the refueling, overhaul, conversion, and inactivation of naval nuclear-powered vessels with the U.S. Department of Navy. Over the last four years, Mr. Rimando has been advancing EM’s mission by exploiting innovative solutions and novel technologies. Because of the high-hazard, high-consequence and high-risk nature of EM’s mission over the next several decades, Mr. Rimando has placed programmatic emphasis on the use of robotics, remote systems, virtual tools, and complementary technologies. Mr. Rimando’s vast, hands-on field experience gives him an end-user perspective that will drive practical use of the state-of-the-art.
