United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission - Protecting People and the Environment

Bruce Biwer

Dr. Bruce Biwer is a chemist in the Environmental Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory where he is the manager for nuclear regulatory programs.  He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton University in 1985 and has been at Argonne since that time.  His past research focused on metal corrosion in aqueous systems, the characterization of potential borosilicate glasses for radioactive waste immobilization, and the radiological risk posed by the storage and disposal of radioactive material as well as the potential release of such material into the environment from facilities and transportation casks.

Dr. Biwer’s current work for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission involves the confirmatory review and analysis of state-of-the-art knowledge and data pertaining to the radiation-assisted degradation of concrete support structures in commercial nuclear power plants.
