Richard Savage

Richard became ONR's Chief Nuclear Inspector in March 2016, an appointment made with the approval of the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. He has 28 years experience in the nuclear sector, having joined the civil nuclear power programme with the UK Atomic Energy Authority in 1987.

In 1996 Richard joined the Ministry of Defence and has held senior positions in the defence nuclear programme both as a regulator and in nuclear programme delivery roles. He served as Head of the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator from 2012 with responsibility for the regulation of nuclear and radiological safety and environmental protection in the defence nuclear programme. He was MOD's Head of Nuclear Profession and gained a Senior Fellowship in recognition of his professionalism.Richard was appointed to ONR in 2014 as a Deputy Chief Nuclear Inspector, with Programme Director responsibilities for ONR's Defence Programme, and Decommissioning, Fuel and Waste Programme. In 2015 the ONR Chair, appointed him in the role of Acting Chief Nuclear Inspector, to lead ONR's regulatory activity.

He has a BSc and PhD from the Faculty of Science and Engineering, Birmingham University. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering, and a member of the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors.
