Patricia Santiago

Ms. Santiago is the Accident Analysis Branch Chief in the Division of Systems Analysis, Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research and since 2010 she has oversight for severe reactor accident consequence analyses.  Key consequence activities have included the State-of-the-Art Reactor Consequence Analyses Project, the Spent Fuel Pool Study, and the Consequence Analyses Supporting the Containment Protection and Release Reduction (CPRR) Rulemaking for boiling-water reactors with Mark I and Mark II containments.  In addition, she oversees the development and maintenance of the MELCOR Accident Consequence Code System (MACCS); the Ignition of Zirconium-Alloy in Prototypical Pressurized Water Reactor Fuel Assemblies in a Spent Fuel Pool with Complete Loss of Coolant international agreement experiment; and the new reactor MELCOR accident progression analysis for integral pressurized-water reactors and APR1400.  Ms. Santiago  joined NRC as a health physicist in the Medical, Academic and Commercial Branch, Industrial and Medical Nuclear Safety (IMNS) Division, Office of Nuclear Materials Safety and Safeguards (NMSS) and has served in several progressively more responsible positions including Commercial Section Branch Chief, IMNS, NMSS; Assistant Director for Materials, Office of Enforcement; and as Technical Assistant for the Deputy Executive Director for Operations, Division of Waste Management, Office of Federal and State Materials and Environmental Management Programs; and the Director, Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research.

Before joining NRC, Ms. Santiago was Chief, Health Physics, Department of the Army, Army Materiel Command responsible for supervising Army licensing, dosimetry, waste disposal, and research reactor programs.  She received the Superior Civilian Service Award for her accomplishments managing these major Army programs.  Ms. Santiago was Supervisor, Radioactive Materials, Bureau of Radiation Protection, State of New Jersey responsible for licensing of medical and industrial programs throughout the State, development of the Certificate of Compliance for permitting spent fuel cask transport through the State as well as serving as a State Radiological Control Officer for oversight of emergency preparedness during a reactor or materials incident.  She also consulted in emergency planning for the Salem and Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Stations.  Ms. Santiago graduated from Monmouth University in New Jersey with a B.S. degree in Biology and completed graduate work in Radiation Sciences at Rutgers University, New Jersey.
