Treatment of Uncertainty in Regulatory Decisionmaking

Sponsored by the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research

This poster session presents thoughts on the following topics:

  • definition on types of uncertainties
  • determination of PRA scope for application
  • treatment of completeness, parameter, model uncertainties
  • licensing strategy in developing application
  • U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) decisionmaking process

This poster session will highlight the information provided in NUREG 1855, “Guidance on the Treatment of Uncertainties Associated with PRAs in Risk‑Informed Decision Making,” Revision 1, and will provide some background on the work conducted by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) as documented in EPRI 1016737, “Treatment of Parameter and Model Uncertainty for Probabilistic Risk Assessments,” and EPRI 1026511, “Practical Guidance on the Use of PRA in Risk‑Informed Applications with a Focus on the Treatment of Uncertainty.”  The poster session will also include insights from the workshop held in November 2015 cosponsored by the NRC and EPRI on this issue.
