Sushil BirlaDr. Sushil Birla (Ph.D., University of Michigan, Ann Arbor - Computer Engineering) is a Senior Technical Advisor at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. His current interest is focused on nuclear regulatory research for digital safety systems, e.g., developing the technical basis for safety review guidance. Formerly, Dr. Birla was a Technical Fellow with General Motors Research and Development, Electrical and Controls Integration Lab, where he earned the coveted Kettering Award for innovative automation of electrical industrial control circuit design. His experience spans multiple application domains including: engineering and evaluation of safety-critical, software-intensive systems in the automotive industry; specification and evaluation of engineering automation; and development of industrial automation. He served a variety of industrial and vehicular automation communities in various roles including: chairman of the former Sector Board 3, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC); expert member and contributor to various IEC/ISO working groups developing standards relevant to Digital Instrumentation and Control systems, e.g. ISO 26262 and IEC 61499; member, USAF-sponsored "Machine Tool Task Force" and award-winning contributor to its study, "Technology of Machine Tools" including his landmark report, "Sensors for Adaptive Control and Machine Diagnostics," which is cited by over 150 articles and used for teaching at many universities. He has authored many articles and reviews for publication by professional societies such as the ACM and IEEE.
