Marlayna Vaaler

Marlayna Vaaler joined the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission after receiving her Bachelors Degree from the University of Pittsburgh in Materials Science and Engineering, and has been with the agency for approximately nine years.  During this time she completed the Nuclear Safety Professional Development Program, served as the project manager for the Shearon Harris and H.B. Robinson nuclear facilities, and conducted vendor and quality assurance inspections for the Construction Mechanical Vendor Inspection organization in the Office of New Reactors.  Currently, Ms. Vaaler is a Project Manager in the Reactor Decommissioning Branch of the Office of Nuclear Materials Safety and Safeguards (NMSS), where she is the lead for the decommissioning activities associated with the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1, 2, and 3, the LaCrosse Boiling Water Reactor, and the General Atomics TRIGA reactor.  She is also participating in the follow up activities surrounding the implementation of the decommissioning planning rule, conducting an evaluation of the NMSS reactor decommissioning program as a way to use lessons learned to create enhancements for the overall decommissioning program, and coordinating an update to the inspection guidance documents associated with reactor decommissioning.
