Robert Lewis

Robert Lewis is the Director of the Division of Preparedness and Response within the Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response.  He ensures the NRC is prepared at all times to respond to any nuclear incident and oversees the five branches in the division: the Operations Branch, Coordination Branch, New Reactor Licensing Branch, Operating Reactor Licensing and Outreach Branch, and Inspection and Regulatory Improvements Branch. 

Mr. Lewis has worked for the NRC for 20 years in a variety of technical and management positions.  He began his career in the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, where he worked on low-level and high-level waste management.  He then worked as a resident inspector, regional inspector, and Technical Advisor for the Chairman of the NRC.  He was a Deputy Director within the Office of Federal and State Materials and Environmental Management Programs for several years before obtaining his current position, and also served a temporary appointment as Deputy Regional Administrator of Region IV.   Mr. Lewis has a bachelor’s degree in Physics from the State University of New York at Fredonia and a master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Arizona.
