Amir Afzali is the Risk-Informed Engineering Department Director at Southern Nuclear Operating Company, a subsidiary of Southern Company. In this role, he is responsible for developing and managing portfolios of risk-informed applications. His responsibilities include identification of risk-informed programs, overseeing development of a business case and project plan for implementation of such programs, ensuring that these programs are supported by the state-of-the-practice models and processes, and providing fleet governance and oversight of the implemented programs. Additionally, Afzali directs all operational activities associated with providing risk assessment in support of issues that may be the subject of the Significance Determination Process, Notice of Enforcement Discretion (NOED), or emergency License Amendment Request (LARs). He works closely with decision makers in other SNC departments to identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support cost-effective solutions for enhancing all aspects of operations and licensing.
Afzali also directs all operational activities of the fire safe shutdown programs for all three sites. In this role, he is responsible for ensuring that effective, reliable, and easily maintainable fire safe-shutdown strategies are developed and maintained for each operating unit as well as ensuring these strategies/programs are supported by the state-of-the-practice tools and processes.
Afzali has advocated the use of performance-based/risk-informed approaches for several years by actively contributing to the efforts of numerous national and international organizations such as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Afzali has worked at a number of utilities and consulting companies as Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) practitioner, PRA Supervisor, and Fire Protection Supervisor.
