W18 Advances in Low-Level Waste Guidance: How Uniform is Your Uniform Manifest?

The purpose of the session is to inform the reactor community about changes in low-level waste guidance and how it may affect them through their obligations under 10 CFR Part 20, "Standards for Protection against Radiation," Appendix G, "Requirements for Transfers of Low-Level Radioactive Waste Intended for Disposal at Licensed Land Disposal Facilities and Manifests." Appendix G contains requirements for low-level waste shipping manifests. The session will discuss updates to the "Branch Technical Position on Concentration Averaging and Encapsulation" and current work on addressing guidance related to the reporting of hydrogen-3, carbon-14, technetium-99, and iodine-129. Licensees use both documents to certify on the manifests that waste has been properly characterized and classified. A panel will include industry representatives, an Agreement State regulator, and an NRC staff member.
