International Engagements

NRC staff have been involved with international activities to share lessons learned with other countries developing similar regulatory frameworks. Specifically, the United States has engaged with the United Kingdom (UK) and Canada to discuss challenges and successes with the development of a fusion regulatory framework, exchange information, and visit UK fusion research facilities and Canada’s commercial tritium operations.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) created the World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG) which establishes a forum for international collaboration and a way to bring together the public and private sector, industry, academia to form a global fusion community. As part of the initial meeting of the WFEG in November 2024, the IAEA published their Fusion Key Elements (FKE) document which outlines the shared vision for fusion development. NRC staff contributed to the development of the FKE.
