Fusion Machine Rulemaking Status

In SECY-24-0085, “Proposed Rule: Regulatory Framework for Fusion Machines,” (Dec. 12, 2024), the NRC staff provided a draft proposed rule to the Commission with accompanying draft guidance, NUREG-1556, Volume 22, “Consolidated Guidance About Materials Licenses: Program-Specific Guidance About Possession Licenses for Fusion Machines.” The Commission is currently reviewing the proposed rule. If approved, both the proposed rule and the new volume to NUREG-1556 will be issued for public comment once the proposed rule is published in the Code of Federal Regulations.
