Abstract

The Federal Government and those receiving its assistance must take reasonable steps to ensure that persons with Limited English Proficiency. (LEP) have meaningful access to the programs, services, and information those entities provide. This requires agencies to think outside the box for creative solutions to address the needs of this ever-growing population of individuals for whom English is not the primary language. Toward that end, this brochure provides an overview of the LEP-related legal authority and obligations, defines the community of individuals who may be entitled to language assistance, identifies who must comply with the LEP requirements, and provides information about the mission and focus of the Interagency Working Group on LEP.
