Information Notice No. 88-73, SUPPLEMENT 1: DIRECTION-DEPENDENT LEAK
CHARACTERISTICS OF
CONTAINMENT PURGE VALVES
Addressees:
All holders of operating licenses or construction permits for nuclear power
reactors.
Purpose:
This information notice supplement is being provided to present information
provided by Fisher Controls International, Inc. on the characteristics of
containment purge valves described in Information Notice No. 88-73. It is
expected that recipients will review the information for applicability to
their facilities and consider actions, as appropriate, to avoid similar
problems. However, suggestions contained in this information notice do not
constitute NRC requirements; therefore, no specific action or written response
is required.
Discussion:
The NRC issued Information Notice No. 88-73 to all holders of operating
licenses or construction permits for nuclear power reactors to provide
information on an event at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1,
involving unexpected direction-dependent leakage through containment purge
valves. These valves were Fisher Controls Series 9200 butterfly valves.
After the issuance of Information Notice No. 88-73, Fisher Controls provided
additional information to their customers and the NRC on the direction-
dependent leak characteristics of the Series 9200 valves. This information is
being provided as Attachment 1. Any questions or clarifications regarding the
Fisher information may be obtained by contacting the appropriate Fisher
Controls representative.
