Re:  Interim Reports - Lucent Technologies, Inc. List 1S Round Cell

     Explosions



Enclosed are Interim Reports on incidents of explosions of the Lucent

Technologies' List 1S Round Cell at two (2) non-nuclear customer sites.



As a follow-up to the Discovery Report, documented January 27, 1997, the

preliminary investigations of the explosions indicate that improper

procedures were followed.  However, Lucent Technologies is conducting an

extensive evaluation in order to determine whether or not a deviation or

a failure to comply could create or could be associated with a

substantial safety hazard.



Per the analysis outlined in the Interim Reports, Lucent expects the

Evaluation Report to be completed by May 19, 1997, which is one week

after the final test results.  The Evaluation Report will be forwarded to

the Nuclear Regulatory Commission consistent with the requirements

outlined in Part 21 of Title 10 of Chapter 1 of the Code of Federal

Regulations.



In the interim, Lucent Technologies has communicated, via PowerFlashes, a

reminder to all of its customers (nuclear and non-nuclear alike) that

they are to follow the safety guidelines as specified in the Round Cell

Product Manual Issue 1, August 1990.
