Dr. Ian Soboroff is the head of the Retrieval Group at the Information Technology Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. His group organizes three annual evaluation workshop series: the Text REtrieval Conference (TREC), on search; the Text Analysis Conference (TAC), on NLP; and the TRECVid Evaluations of Video Search. Each of these is an open community effort that produces datasets and defines experimental methods for IR, NLP, and multimedia researchers in academia, industry, and government. Ian joined the Retrieval Group in 2001 and has developed dozens of test collections for text filtering, novelty detection, web search, blog search and opinion classification, semantic search, Twitter search, knowledge base support, news search, and more. His interests include the science and practice of building datasets, measuring their capabilities and their limits, and designing new test collections to support people as they interact with information.
