United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission - Protecting People and the Environment

The Honorable Jeffrey Merrifield

Jeff Merrifield, Partner and Energy Section leader at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, is a former presidential appointee to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, who identifies strategic and legal solutions for major energy and environmental issues.

Jeff utilizes the wide range of experience he has gained over the last 30 years, having worked as an attorney in the U.S. Senate and as a senior executive at the largest power engineering and construction company in the United States—in addition to his time on the NRC–to bring his clients a unique perspective on strategic problem-solving.

At Pillsbury, Jeff's experience includes advising Brookfield Business Partners L.P. on its $4.6 billion acquisition of Westinghouse Electric Company, in which Pillsbury advised on critical regulatory and policy issues. He also provides counsel and representation to a group of utilities before the Nuclear Regulatory Commission regarding how to meet NRC physical security requirements, offering crucial advice on challenges to some of these requirements. Jeff serves as a counselor and advisor to X-energy, the developer of an innovative high-temperature gas advanced reactor and Terrestrial Energy which is developing an innovative molten salt reactor.  He also serves as outside legal advisor to Clearpath Foundation, a free-market, clean energy advocacy organization which promotes nuclear power, carbon capture and hydropower as non-carbon-based solutions to providing clean energy.

Jeff is Chairman of E4 Carolinas, and Chairman of the Nuclear Infrastructure Council Advanced Reactors Task Force where he leads an effort to promote the deployment of this innovative nuclear technology.
