Mark Thaggard

Mark Thaggard serves as Deputy Director, Division of Risk Analysis, Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research (RES).

Mr. Thaggard joined the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 1989 as a hydrologist in the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards (NMSS). He held a number of progressively responsible positions in NMSS, the former Office of Federal and State Materials and Environmental Management Programs (FSME), and the Office of New Reactors. In 2009, he was selected for the Senior Executive Service (SES) position of Deputy Director, Division of Intergovernmental Liaison and Rulemaking, FSME. In 2011, he was selected as Deputy Director for Emergency Preparedness, Division of Preparedness and Response, Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response (NSIR). In 2013, he was appointed as the Deputy Director, Division of Security Policy, NSIR, He has also served as Deputy Director, Division of Risk Analysis, RES, and most recently selected as Director, Division of Risk Analysis, RES.

Prior to joining NRC, Mr. Thaggard worked for the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the U.S. Geological Survey.

Mr. Thaggard received a Bachelor’s Degree in Geology from the University of South Florida, a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science from the University of South Florida, and Master’s Degrees in applied Mathematics and Environmental Engineering from John Hopkins University. He is a graduate of the NRC’s SES Candidate Development Program.
