John Thelen

John Thelen is an employee of Canada's nuclear regulator, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). My career includes more than 25 years of successively more complex technical and supervisory work duties dealing with industrial and nuclear facility operations and legacies. My career began in New Jersey and Maryland as an environmental remediation specialist planning and conducting fieldwork campaigns at contaminated EPA Superfund sites. A move back to Canada resulted in a career reboot in 2007 as a CNSC project officer and inspector of nuclear fuel cycle facilities and waste management facilities. More recent responsibilities include: providing strategic advice to executive management; communicating with various stakeholders including indigenous groups; collaborating with provincial, federal and international regulatory bodies; and leading CNSC teams responsible for licensing, compliance and enforcement programs.
