John McKirgan

John McKirgan is currently the Deputy Director of the Division of Engineering in the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research. He joined the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 2004 as a Program Manager in the Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response. Since then, he has served in various capacities including Technical Assistant for the Division of Safety Systems and Risk Assessment in the Office of New Reactors (NRO), Chief of the AP1000 Licensing Branch, Chief of the Reactor Systems, Nuclear Performance & Code Review Branch, and Chief of the Containment Systems and Ventilation Branch in NRO. More recently, he served at the Chief of the Storage and Transportation Licensing Branch in the Division of Fuel Management in the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards (NMSS). He has also completed temporary assignments as Acting Deputy Director of the Division of Engineering in Office of New Reactors, and the Acting Deputy Director of the Division of Risk Assessment in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation.

Before joining the NRC, he worked for the US Navy at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Carderock, Maryland where he performed testing and analysis of naval ship and weapon systems. Mr. McKirgan holds Bachelor and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland at College Park and is a graduate of both the NRC's Leadership Potential Program and the NRC's Senior Executive Service Candidate Development Program.
