2.0 Site Status Summary
The NTR license was renewed on June 29, 2023, in response to the GE-Hitachi application for license renewal dated November 19, 2020. The licensee informed NRC that it had permanently ceased operation of the NTR on December 21, 2023, NRC issued a possession-only license for NTR on February 28, 2024. On March 14, 2025, the license was transferred to NorthStar Vallecitos, LLC (NSV). The facility is being maintained in a storage condition.
3.0 Major Technical or Regulatory Issues
On July 15, 2026, NSV submitted an interim Decommissioning Plan. The NRC accepted the interim Decommissioning Plan for review on September 1, 2026 and anticipates issuing a decision by June 28, 2027. Acceptance of the application was noticed in the Federal Register on September 29, 2026 (91 FR 61466).
