This final supplemental environmental impact statement (SEIS) has been prepared in response to an application submitted by PSEG Nuclear, LLC (PSEG) to renew the operating licenses for Hope Creek Generating Station (HCGS) and Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1 and 2 (Salem) for an additional 20 years.
This final SEIS provides an analysis that evaluates the environmental impacts of the proposed action and alternatives to the proposed action. Alternatives considered include replacement power from a new supercritical coal-fired generation and natural gas combined-cycle generation plant; a combination of alternatives that includes natural gas combined-cycle generation, energy conservation/energy efficiency, and wind power; and not renewing the operating licenses (the no-action alternative).
The recommendation is that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission determined that the adverse environmental impacts of license renewal for Salem and HCGS are not so great that preserving the option of license renewal for energy-planning decision-makers would be unreasonable.
