The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) significantly improved the state-of-art of fire PRA methodology with the development and documentation of the joint publication NUREG/CR-6850, EPRI 1011989 "EPRI/NRC-RES Fire PRA Methodology for Nuclear Power Facilities." Although the individual portions of the methodology were tested in this joint project, the methodology was not tested in an integrated fashion. As a part of the fire PRAs developed for transition to the voluntary risk-informed, performance-based fire protection rule, 10CFR 50.48(c), the methodology was tested in a fully integrated fashion to yield risk results.

As a part of their transition to 10CFR50.48(c), the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 805 pilot plants raised a broad set of fire PRA questions while performing their fire PRAs. These questions became part of the overall NFPA 805 frequently asked questions (FAQ) program established by the NRC. NRC, EPRI, and the broader industry participated in this FAQ program to develop interim responses to these questions.

The interim responses for these fire PRA FAQs, i.e. NUREG/CR-6850 FAQs, through April, 2010 are provided in this report. These FAQ responses significantly improve our knowledge about this set of fire PRA issues, and can be used to enable more realistic estimates of fireinduced core damage frequency.

Importantly, although these FAQ responses are considered interim, all 15 are currently publically available on ADAMS, and will also be available in this document once it is published. Therefore, they are currently in use and will remain so until results are known for research programs currently being planned or conducted that can be used to improve our knowledge of these issues. Ultimately, these FAQ responses or their enhancements will be integrated into a future revision of NUREG/CR-6850 (EPRI 1011989).
