U.S. nuclear power plants are safe; the NRC is making them safer by offering plants the opportunity to use a new and scientifically sound way of reducing fire risks further. The NRC has modified its fire protection regulations to allow licensees to adopt, on a voluntary basis, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 805, "Performance-Based Standard for Fire Protection for Light-Water Reactor Electric Generating Plants" (NFPA 805), in lieu of their existing fire protection licensing basis.
