Low-Level Waste Reference Documents
In October 2016, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) conducted an audit of NRC's oversight of low-level radioactive waste (LLRW) disposal program. Specifically, the objective of the audit was review NRC's oversight of the disposal and waste blending processes at disposal facilities and if they are done safely and effectively. The report found that the NRC provides adequate oversight of LLRW disposal and blending processes through inspection activities. However, it noted that although LLRW guidance is adequate, some stakeholders have had difficulty finding NRC's LLRW guidance and there are numerous guidance documents stored on various websites.
This effort helps to ensure that the many staff positions on LLRW issues are readily available to licensees, States, future developers of LLRW disposal sites, and other stakeholders.
The NRC staff has consolidated the LLRW guidance documents on the NRC Website.
