Alert

Due to a lapse in appropriations, the NRC has ceased normal operations. However, excepted and exempted activities necessary to maintain critical health and safety functions—as well as essential progress on designated critical activities, including those specified in Executive Order 14300—will continue, consistent with the OMB-Approved NRC Lapse Plan.

Generic Issues Program

Through our assessment of plant operation, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has identified certain issues involving public health and safety, the common defense and security, or the environment that could affect multiple entities under NRC jurisdiction. We document and track resolution of these generic issues (GIs). The generic issues program (GIP) includes three distinct stages: Screening, Assessment, and Regulatory Office Implementation. In addition, the GIP tracks and reports the GI status and resolutions to Congress and the public. The resolution of these issues may involve new or revised rules, new or revised guidance, or revised interpretation of rules or guidance that affect nuclear power plant licensees, nuclear material certificate holders, or holders of other regulatory approvals. Congress requires the NRC to maintain this program [see Section 210 of the 1974 Energy Reorganization Act (Public Law 95-209)].
