T8 The Next Generation Workforce - Charting the Course for Another 50 Years

The timely, efficient and effective execution of NRC regulatory activities requires a highly capable and resilient workforce. Ensuring that the NRC attracts, develops, and retains a next generation nuclear workforce with strong technical and regulatory capabilities will enable the safe and efficient deployment of novel nuclear technology applications and the associated benefits for society. The ever-changing career landscape has shifted toward increasing workplace flexibilities, greater deployment of information technology, and a need for a sustained work-life balance to ensure talent is retained at all organizational levels. Because these challenges and opportunities are not unique to the NRC, the session will also include multiple stakeholder perspectives to highlight how the different areas of the nuclear sector are addressing these issues. The session will include a diverse range of speakers, representing the NRC staff, research universities, and the nuclear industry. This session will focus on the evolving context for staffing strategies, describe how active university engagement strategies support the safe deployment of nuclear technology, implementation of development programs to quickly bring newly hired staff up to a full performance level, and how knowledge management is leveraged to incorporate historical lessons learned into modern regulatory and operational processes.
