W10 Elevating NRC Safety and Efficiency Through Risk-Informed Decision-Making

This session will explore how the agency has transformed and evolved into today's modern, risk-informed regulator. Risk-Informed Decision-Making (RIDM) and other strategies have helped staff and licensees focus their resources on issues commensurate with their risk significance while ensuring safety. The NRC's Be riskSMART framework facilitates the integration of risk information into all regulatory decisions. By focusing on the most safety-significant issues, the framework enhances the agency’s ability to adapt to an ever-changing nuclear landscape. The passage of the Accelerating Deployment of Versatile, Advanced Energy (ADVANCE) Act underscores the need for the continued refinement of risk-informed practices as new reactors and technologies emerge. The NRC staff will present on the advances made in applying risk insights to critical regulatory areas—such as reactor licensing, oversight, and emergency planning —demonstrating how these efforts have led to greater efficiency and effectiveness in the NRC’s regulatory processes while ensuring that the agency’s safety mission is met. This will be followed by representatives from the nuclear industry, who will discuss the ongoing advancements and challenges as they continue to push for a future where risk-informed practices guide the next generation of reactors and operations.
