Mike Finnerty

Mike is Deputy Chief Nuclear Inspector and Director for the New Reactors Division at the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), providing strategic leadership to ensure effective delivery of all regulatory activity associated with the UK’s new nuclear build agenda.  Mike is also ONR’s lead for innovation, driving forward plans to regulate advances across the industry, as well as employing innovative approaches to how ONR will regulate in the future.  This will build on the work Mike has done to develop and implement a modern, enabling approach to regulation across ONR.  Mike has been with ONR for 16 years and prior to his current appointment, he was instrumental in developing and implementing ONR’s strategy to accelerate risk and hazard reduction at the Sellafield site, achieving great success in influencing Sellafield to make real progress in this area.  Mike has also a wealth of experience from a number of other roles in ONR, including site inspection, specialist assessment and leading and implementing change across the organisation.  Prior to joining ONR, Mike has spent 15 years in industry as a criticality, shielding and reactor physics specialist, working in both the civil and defence nuclear sectors.
