Gentlemen: 

SUBJECT:  TRANSMITTAL OF NUREG-0977 RELATIVE TO THE ATWS EVENTS AT SALEM 
          GENERATING STATION, UNIT NO. 1 (GENERIC LETTER 83-16) 

On February 22 and 25, 1983, the Salem Generating Station, Unit No. 1 
experienced ATWS events. Shortly after the events, a task force was 
established at Region I to gather and report on the factual information 
surrounding the event. 

The task force has now completed its investigation and has documented the 
factual information and their findings associated with the event in 
NUREG-0977, titled "NRC Fact-Finding Task Force Report on the ATWS Events at
the Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1, on February 22 and 25, 1983." 
Copies were forwarded to you by previous distribution on March 21, 1983. You
should review the information for applicability to your facility. 

In addition, you should ensure that the information in NUREG-0977 is made 
available to your plant staff as part of your training program under TMI 
Action Plan Item I.C.5, Feedback of Operating Experience to Plant Staff.
