FINAL 10CFR2I REPORTABILITY DETERMINATION, GE MODEL CR2940U301 SWITCH SALEM GENERATING STATION UNITS I AND 2 FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE NO. DPR-70 AND DPR-75 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 311

Pursuant to the requirements of 10CFR21.21(a)(2), Public Service Electric & Gas Company (PSE&G) submitted an interim report by letter dated January 8, 2000. The report described a potentially reportable deviation involving the failure of two new General Electric (GE) Model CR2940U301 switches. PSE&G submitted two supplements to the interim report by letters dated April 12, 2000 and June 15, 2000.

GE performed an investigation and reported the most probable cause for failure of one of the switches to be binding in the contact and carrier assemblies. No definite cause could be found for failure of the second switch. However, GE reported the most probable cause to be arcing damage to the contacts.

Based on the information provided by GE, PSE&G has concluded that the failures described in the interim report were random independent occurrences and were not due to a common cause. Therefore, they are not reportable in accordance with the requirements of 10CFR21.
