Richard Mark Wachowiak

Rick Wachowiak is a Senior Technical Leader in the Risk and Safety Management Program at EPRI. In this position, he is responsible for research activities in severe accident management, severe accident modeling, and fire probabilistic risk assessment (PRA).

Prior to joining EPRI in 2010, Wachowiak was the engineering manager for nuclear island mechanical systems at GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, providing the primary interface between GEH Engineering and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the design certification of the ESBWR.  Previously, he served as the technical lead for probabilistic risk assessment and severe accident management for new units at GEH.  Wachowiak also has commercial nuclear power plant operating experience.  He was the supervisor for PRA for Cooper Nuclear Station and worked as a PRA engineer at Duane Arnold Energy Center and Palisades Nuclear Plant.

Wachowiak holds a master’s degree in nuclear engineering from Purdue University and a bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from Purdue University.  He also received a Senior Reactor Operator Certification for Cooper Nuclear Station.
