Overview

The mission of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is to protect public health and safety and advance the nation’s common defense and security by enabling the safe and secure use and deployment of civilian nuclear energy technologies and radioactive materials through efficient and reliable licensing, oversight, and regulation for the benefit of society and the environment.

The NRC’s FY 2026 budget request, including the Office of the Inspector General, is $971,495K, including 2,792 full-time equivalents. This request represents an increase of $27,408K or approximately 2.9 percent as compared to FY 2025 enacted. The NRC plans to recover $819,395K from fees, resulting in a net budget authority of $152,100K. This is an increase of $15,010K as compared to FY 2025 enacted, primarily to support advanced reactors preapplication and application activities, international nuclear export and innovation activities, and generic homeland security.

The Office of the Inspector General’s (OIG’s) component of the FY 2026 proposed budget is $18,795K, including 68 FTE, of which $17,223K is for auditing and investigation activities for NRC programs, and $1,572K is for the auditing and investigation activities of the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB). This is an increase of $3,026K or approximately 19.2 percent as compared to FY 2025 enacted.
