Subject: Potential 10 CFR 21

Dear Sir;

This letter is to inform you of a potential safety hazard for some 3/4

Sch 40 pipe shipped to two or our customers, Carolina Power & Light and

Virginia Power Corp. This material has been found, to have areas where

the wall thickness falls below the minimum allowed by the SA 312

specification. When the material was cut by Virginia Power Corp at their

North Anna site this condition was found. The minimum wall thickness of

.099 had been violated. Some of the readings were as low as .087.

A sample of this material has been returned to Sandvik Steel, the

producer, in Scranton, PA, for evaluation.

The orders were for 3/4, schedule 40, Pipe SA 312, type 304. Carolina

Power & Light, PO #8N7398CJ had one piece 23' 11" and PO #8P8410CJ had 2

pieces totaling 46' 11", all of this material came from heat 946989.

The Virginia Power Corp orders were #CNT-552587, CNT-55-601 1, & CNT-

558917 for one piece each of 3/4 schedule 40 Pipe, SA 312, type 304.

Each piece was 22' to 23' 6" random length from heat #46989.

information received from the producer of the pipe, when it is available.
