In August 2021, the Commission directed the NRC staff to provide a notation vote paper containing a range of options for the scope of a potential rulemaking. This direction was in response to an October 2019 staff paper that recommended discontinuing the previously-proposed rulemaking, having determined that a rulemaking solely to codify post-9/11 security orders would not improve public health and safety or the common defense and security, and would not be cost-justified. This is the last of three public meetings in 2023, each focused on specific aspects of security for nuclear material.
