The NRC's Use of Codes for Efficient Licensing Reviews-The SCALE Computer Code System

Sponsored by the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards

The SCALE Computer Code System, developed and maintained by Oak Ridge National Laboratory and under contract by the NRC, has been used extensively by NRC staff and NRC licensees and applicants to perform isotopic depletion, criticality safety, and radiation shielding calculations for radioactive and fissile material systems. Originally developed as a comprehensive tool for evaluating radioactive material transportation package designs, it's use has been extended to support fuel cycle facility licensing, spent fuel pool and dry storage, reactor and experiment design, and many other radioactive and fissile material systems. This digital exhibit will highlight the features of the SCALE code system used by NRC staff to support current reviews for reactors, fuel facilities, transportation packages, and storage systems during the licensing and certification process, and demonstrate potential uses of the code for ATF, Non-LWR, and HALEU licensing activities in the near future.
