2.0 Site Status Summary

The former Alameda Naval Air Station is located in Alameda, California, along the San Francisco Bay. The site is being remediated by the Navy under the required CERCLA process and EPA oversight. The NRC has not licensed this site. Instead, the staff is using a "limited involvement approach to stay informed" and will rely on the ongoing Navy remediation under the CERCLA process and EPA oversight. This approach was approved by the Commission for the Navy's remediation at the Hunters Point Shipyard site in San Francisco, California. More information is available on this approach in SECY-08-0077. NRC continues to stay informed by conducting annual site visits and progress meetings with the Navy, EPA, and State agencies.
